Book Illustration Competition-- 1Q84 Book 1 by Murakami Haruki

There are couple of competition that open for illustrator, thought I could try to collect some experience by participate in book illustration. This is my first time doing book illustration and I choose book that I've just finished reading, that's 1Q84 by Japanese novelist-- Murakami Haruki. This competition is the extra from university practice and not part of my major project. However I think working in book illustration can help me in interpreting text to image.

Book 1 "April-- June", introduced the story setting and characters. Throughout the book two characters, Aomame and Tengo, told their story in chapters alternatively. Stories of these two characters seems has no relationship to each other, in the end of the book they were brought together by another story told in the novel, story within stories.

I interested in the relationship between characters, and stories. Aomame thought she felt into a unknown time space, where and when some critical incidents happened did not made up with her memory, and she named it 1Q84. 'Q' stands for questions, who has changed? she herself or the world?  why she is the only one who felt strange about the world she living in. On the other hand, Tengo met a girl named Fukueri, through revised story told by Fukueri-- "Air Cocoon" for a novel competition. "Air Cocoon" was suspected to have connection with Fukueri experience in a cult organisation and is true story. 1Q84 had two moons, so as in "Air Cocoon".
