Quick look at Library and Art Gallery

Our first project for the 2nd year is about 'drawing', as I think, is a very basic practice to a artist. We are advised that drawing is not limited with the medium we use. In the other words, not only paper and pencil can form a drawing, other medium like acrylic, oil paint, camera, computer, etc also produce a drawing.

There are three nominated sites in Huddersfield as a starting point for the project-- Town Library and Art Gallery, Railway Station and St. George's Square, and Queensgate Market. In the first stage of the project, we basically perform drawing as sites survey and observation.

The week when the project is reveal, it is very lucky for us as the weather is nice for outdoor activities, collecting information for the sites is easier and more freely. At this stage, I'm using photograph and quick sketch to collect information at the sites. Then, using the photograph as reference, more detail is added to the original quick sketch and also new sketching and drawing is produce.

The first site I investigated is the Library and Art Gallery. The building of the library itself is a clean edge cube to me, so, I see the details as an attachment to the building.

The library is surrounded by the shops of the piazza, benches are also available and there are two tile made chess board open for the public.  The shops are arranged in a curve shape, creates a contrast between the very formal looking library and the interesting display of the piazza. The piazza create a recreation environment, people are sitting down having a conversation (noise); compare to the serious situation (quiet) happen inside the library. However, the chess game going on in front of the library blur the strong contrast between these two place, people are moving around to shift the chessman, also remain silent to think.
